Kamala Harris campaign slams Trump for serving ‘self-righteous rich men’ after Elon Musk interview

Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign has strongly opposed former President Trump’s interview with billionaire Elon Musk, saying the Trump campaign is in the service of “self-righteous rich guys who will betray the middle class.”

Trump joined Musk on X Spaces, a live audio chat feature on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, for an interview Monday night, though it got off to a shaky start due to technical difficulties. Millions of people ultimately tuned in to the interview, according to the live tracker during the discussion.

Musk said in a message after the interview that he would also like to have Harris at X Spaces.

During Monday’s interview, Musk gave Trump ample time to explain his positions on a range of issues, including immigration, the assassination attempt he survived at a campaign rally last month, inflation and the idea of abolishing the Department of Education to give states control over the school system.

Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign has strongly opposed former President Trump’s interview with billionaire Elon Musk.

“I want to close the Department of Education, take education back to the states … Out of 50 (states), I would bet 35 would do great. And 15 of them, or, you know, 20 of them, will be as good as Norway. You know, Norway is considered great,” Trump said, adding that deep blue states like California could struggle if the department is abolished.

Harris’ campaign attacked Trump after the interview about the policy proposals the former president cited, as well as the technical problems plaguing the X Space.

“Donald Trump’s extremism and dangerous Project 2025 agenda is a feature, not a flaw, of his campaign, which was on full display to those unfortunate enough to be listening tonight during whatever was on X.com,” Harris campaign spokesman Joseph Costello said in a statement. “Trump’s entire campaign is in service of people like Elon Musk and himself — self-absorbed rich guys who will sell out the middle class and who can’t livestream in the year 2024.”

Project 2025 is a controversial initiative of the conservative think tank Heritage Foundation and was conceived by a number of conservatives, including some former Trump administration officials.

Trump was Musk’s guest Monday night at X Spaces, a live audio chat feature on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

The initiative offers right-wing policy recommendations for Trump, should he win the presidential election. These include replacing government workers with Trump supporters, disbanding the Department of Education, criminalizing pornography, abolishing DEI programs, cutting funding for Medicaid and Medicare, defunding abortion as health care, and infusing Christian values into government.

Trump has tried to to relinquish the initiative, which has been criticized as an authoritarian and Christian nationalist plan that would undermine civil liberties. He says he knows nothing about it, that parts of it are “absolutely ridiculous and horrible” and that its proponents belong to the “radical right.”

On Monday, Trump returned to X after nearly a year of not posting on the social media platform, though he did run a series of campaign ads ahead of the interview with Musk.

Before Musk bought X in 2022, Trump was suspended from the platform following the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riots, when the platform was still known as Twitter. But even after Musk reinstated his account, Trump’s only post was a photo of his arrest in August of last year.

Harris’ campaign said Trump’s campaign “serves people like Elon Musk and himself: self-centered rich guys who will betray the middle class.”

“This country is going down, and these people are bad people that we’re fighting against. And they’re liars. They make statements. They do things that are so bad. They say they’re going to make a strong border. They say they’ve done a great job on the border, and they’ve been the worst in history. They say they’re going to stop crime,” Trump said toward the end of the interview.

“She’s seen as much more liberal than Bernie Sanders. She’s a radical leftist nutcase. And if she becomes our president, we’re going to have no country very quickly. And she’s going to go back to all the things she believes in. She believes in defunding the police. She believes in no fracking, zero,” Trump added of Harris.

Trump also addressed President Biden’s decision last month to suspend his re-election campaign, saying it was a Democratic “coup” that pressured the president to step aside. Biden’s decision came amid pressure from Democrats to withdraw from the race over concerns about his mental acuity.

“This was a coup d’etat. This was a coup d’etat by a president of the United States. He didn’t want to go away and they said, ‘We can do it the nice way, or we can do it the hard way,'” Trump said.

“They just took him behind the shed and shot him,” Musk responded before Trump criticized Biden as “the worst president in history.”
