Mr Nathan Drahi, Managing Director of Sotheby’s Asia, said: “The opening of our Maison in the heart of Hong Kong marks a new era for Sotheby’s. This new location not only allows us to bring Sotheby’s closer to the community, but also to present some of the world’s most unique and diverse objects to the public, sparking the curiosity of all who visit Sotheby’s.”

Woolly mammoths (Mammuthus primigenius) – perhaps the best-known and most studied species of mammoth – conquered the Earth during the last ice age, known as the Pleistocene. This rare complete individual woolly mammoth skeleton is exceptionally well-preserved and differs from other specimens found in museums, which are often assembled from bones from multiple individuals. The species existed in Siberia during the Third Ice Age, and coexisted with Neanderthals during the Middle Paleolithic and as Homo sapiens during the Upper Paleolithic, until their extinction around 12,000 B.C. Mammoths were hunted by prehistoric humans and developed specialized teeth and defense mechanisms to protect themselves from predators and hunters. Their long, curved tusks were used not only for self-defense, but also for digging and scraping under snow for food. These naturally formed tusks emerged at birth and continued to grow in an organic curve throughout their lives.

Titled Giants of the Ice Age: Journey to Prehistoric Earth with the Woolly Mammoth As part of Sotheby’s exhibition “Another World”, this remarkable fossil will take centre stage on the ground floor of LANDMARK ATRIUM.

“This rare exhibition with Sotheby’s marks the first of a series of exceptional experiences that LANDMARK is bringing to Hong Kong as part of our ‘Tomorrow’s CENTRAL’ transformation. Our vision is to curate world-class experiences that will enrich and inspire our community,” said Alvin Kong, Executive Director, Hongkong Land.

Just a stone’s throw away, on the first floor of the Maison at LANDMARK CHATER and housed in the Salons (Sotheby’s carefully curated retail offering featuring hundreds of objects and 80 million years of history), visitors can also view two other spectacular examples.

These include a spectacular prehistoric skull of a woolly mammoth from the Quaternary (2.6 million years old) from Siberia and a Gryposaurus (a young gryposaur) from the Late Cretaceous (100 to 66 million years ago).

The baby Gryposaur skeleton is one of the most spectacular and important discoveries in paleontology in recent times. A fully grown adult Gryposaurus would have been about 27 feet long. This baby Gryposaurus, found in a cliffside in the Judith River Formation of Montana, western United States, is just under nine feet long and likely died in a catastrophic flood. This is one of the few Gryposaurs ever discovered.

Dinosaurs and other prehistoric fossils, which have fascinated and amazed generations, have become increasingly popular as modern collectibles in recent years. Sotheby’s has conducted numerous historic Natural History sales, including the US$8.3 million sale of “Sue,” the most complete T. rex fossil ever discovered. Most recently in New York, “Apex,” the most beautiful stegosaurus ever seen, made Sotheby’s history as the most valuable fossil ever sold publicly (US$44.6 million), surpassing its pre-sale estimate by more than 11 times.

Sotheby’s Maison is the first of 10 leading Maisons to open their doors as part of LANDMARK’s recently announced “Tomorrow’s CENTRAL” transformation. This groundbreaking collaboration offers a tantalizing glimpse into the unparalleled experiences that will soon unfold within the reimagined LANDMARK.

In celebration of Sotheby’s “Giants of The Ice Age: Travel To Prehistoric Earth With The Woolly Mammoth” exhibition at LANDMARK ATRIUM, August 16-29, the first 100 visitors each day to create a Sotheby’s account will have a chance to win specially designed stickers inspired by the wonders of the prehistoric world. This limited-edition sticker will also serve as an all-access pass for attendees to unlock an exclusive interactive experience at Sotheby’s Maison.
