Jenkins Twp. Lions Hold Scholarship Dinner

JENKINS TWP. — Jenkins Twp. Lions Club awarded $500 scholarships each to 16 Pittston Area applicants during the awards dinner on Aug. 13 at Tony’s Wine Cellar.

In the spring of 2024, the Lions Club set a goal of funding all scholarship applicants.

The winners are: Victoria Para, Aubrey Curley, Mia DeMarco, Meredith Purcell, Joseph Long, Jack Long, Justin Bryk, Katelyn Wesp, Carmen Cox, Max Anthony Castellino, Ava Callahan, Lauren Cox, Alanah Rinish, Kailyn Bucci, Keegan Bucci and Ella Hoban.

In addition to the scholarships awarded, 13 community grants were provided to supplement the three awards presented by the Lions Club.

The donors of the scholarship were:

• Albert Family: In memory of deceased parents Jack and Dorothy Albert

• Jones Family: In memory of deceased Lion member Robert Jones.

• Ruskey Family: In memory of Mary Ruskey.

• Joseph Bradigan: In memory of grandfather and teacher Frank Bradigan.

• McGarry Family: In memory of Raymond McGarry.

• Linskey Family: In memory of Donna Casey.

• Stephen Vitek: In memory of mother Mary Vitek.

• Brian Reese: Reese Computer Services.

• Conlon Family: In memory of deceased parents Jim and Jean Conlon.

• BHW INC.

• Jenkins Township Supervisors

• Florence Para: In memory of her husband, Joe Para.

• United Methodist Houses/Wesley Village

Tom Ruskey, president of the Jenkins Lions Club, praised the students for their outstanding academic performance.

President Ruskey told students to apply themselves and excel in their studies. Success requires both education and hard work.

“Thank your parents for the many sacrifices they made to get them to this point in their lives,” Ruskey said.

“It was a great honor to receive this scholarship from the Jenkins Twp. Lions to help with my finances and it is especially dear to my heart as a lifelong resident of Jenkins Twp. and a Little Leaguer,” said Ava Callahan. “I am studying biology and I will be using this money to purchase lab equipment and a keyboard for my iPad to help me take notes in class.”

The co-chairs of the 2024 Jenkins Twp. Lions Club Scholarship Drive were Ruskey and Bob Linskey.
