Udaipur student stabbed by Ayan Sheikh dies hours after his sister tied him in a Rakhi, cremation amid tight security

Devraj, a class 10 student, died on Monday night (August 19) after he was stabbed by his classmate Ayan Sheikh at the government high school in Udaipur.

Following the stabbing incident on Friday, a tense situation arose in the Rajasthan city as both students belonged to different communities.

There was arson and vandalism and the shops were closed as the Hindus protested the attack. The suspect’s father was soon arrested by the police.

The knife attack is said to have taken place following a minor disagreement after the lunch break, during which Devraj sustained injuries to his arteries, causing blood circulation to be disrupted.

He was undergoing treatment at Maharana Bhupal Hospital in Udaipur, where he died hours after his sister and cousins tied Rakhi around his wrist on the occasion of Rakshabandhan.

After Devraj’s death, tensions rose again in the city and the police invoked Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Samhita and blocked all internet services to prevent violence.

The victim’s body was handed over to the family after the autopsy. The cremation was scheduled to take place Tuesday morning.

A bulldozer operation was carried out against the house of the accused, as is the practice under Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state governments. It was alleged that the house was built on forest land.

Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma had also sent a team of specialist doctors from Jaipur to attend to the child, but the child succumbed to his injuries before the team could do its job.

A heavy police presence is yet to be deployed in the area. The District Collector, Superintendent of Police and other senior officers are keeping a watch on the situation in the city.

The stabbing incident came two years after a tailor named Kanhaiya Lal was beheaded in Udaipur by Islamic fundamentalists for his post supporting BJP leader Nupur Sharma.
