Oklahoma high school football 2024 Class 2A-II district previews

A year ago, Alva started the 2023 Oklahoma high school football season with a sense of confidence.

The Goldbugs had finished 4-6 the year before, winning just two of their seven district games. After losing their final three games of the season, Alva was hoping to start the new season strong. The team would once again get off to a slow start, losing three of their first four games. However, Alva came away with solid wins as it played out its schedule and gained momentum heading into the postseason. After going 4-3 in district play, the Goldbugs defeated Chandler and Kingston before falling 34-14 to Kiefer in the Class 2A quarterfinals. Now in a new division, Alva has the opportunity to build on its postseason run as it prepares for a new district schedule in 2024. As the 2024 Oklahoma high school football season approaches, here are some of the storylines, players, games to watch, and preseason district coaches’ polls for Class 2A-II:

Top Storylines

How will Alva and Vian perform in a new division? Several schools made the divisional transfers during the midseason realignment. Most notably, Alva and Vian, both of which reached the quarterfinals in Class 2A last year, lost in the playoffs to teams that remained in Division 2A-I. Now, both teams have a chance to capitalize on their new conference.

Can Beggs respond after a tough season in 2023? Coming into last season, Beggs had made the playoffs every year since 2008. However, after losing the last three district games, the Golden Demons missed the postseason for the first time in more than a decade. After finishing 4-6, Beggs hopes to respond in 2024.

Returning stars

Ryan Grayson, Sr., Beggs: Grayson, a receiver and defensive back, has 1,457 total yards, 15 scores and six interceptions in eight games. He has offers from Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Kansas State and UNLV.

Seneca Steele, Sr., Kansas: Steele returns as Kansas’ quarterback after helping the Comets earn a second-round playoff appearance, with over 2,500 passing yards, 840 rushing yards and 35 touchdowns.Kenny Golston, Jr., Valliant: Golston is back for Valliant and will be looking to build on a solid sophomore campaign. The running back rushed for over 1,000 yards and had 17 touchdowns last season. Golston also played linebacker, with 71 tackles and three sacks. The junior has offers from Oregon, Oregon State, Washington State, UTSA and UNLV.

Masyn Wright, Jr., Vian: Wright took snaps at quarterback and running back for Vian last season. He carried the ball 113 times for 1,015 yards and 17 touchdowns last season. The junior also completed 25 of 38 passes and threw six touchdowns.

Malachi Henderson, Sr., Holdenville: Henderson helped Holdenville to a 7-4 finish during the 2023-24 season, carrying the ball 27 times for 330 yards and five touchdowns.

Colby Shannon, Sr., Comanche: Shannon is a two-way player for Comanche. He finished last season with 867 yards and six touchdowns on offense. On defense, he had 43 tackles and five interceptions.

Jordyn Miller, Sr., Henryetta: Miller is looking to return to the playoffs after being eliminated in the first round last season. The defensive lineman had 85 total tackles in 2023.

Draighton Fletcher, Jr., Vian: Fletcher played in 11 games last year and had 146 carries for 1,272 yards, an average of 115.6 yards per game. The running back has scored 18 touchdowns during the 2023 season.

AJ Shadid, Sr., Fellowship Christian: Shadid, a 6-foot-3, 275-pound offensive lineman, enters his senior season with offers from Tulsa and Johns Hopkins and hopes to help Community Christian rebound after a 3-7 finish last year.

Top matches football class 2A-II in 2024

Alva at Stroud, week 6: Both teams lost in the quarterfinals in 2023. Alva has eight starters on offense and six on defense this year, but is adjusting to a new coach. Stroud is coming off a 10-3 season and was 7-0 in district play, but is moving up from Class A to 2A. The game will highlight the two highest-ranked teams in District 2A-II-1.Davis at Beggs, week 4: Davis is coming off a trip to the second round of the Class 2A playoffs. Beggs, however, struggled toward the end of the regular season, losing its final three games in district play. Now, Beggs will look to start strong at the top of its conference slate against its District 2A-II-2 opponent, Davis.Colcord at Adair, week 8: This matchup features the top two teams in District 2A-II-3. Colcord is adjusting after moving up from Class A to 2A, but finished 10-2 in its division last season. Adair is coming off a second-round playoff appearance and has four seniors and a junior back on the offensive line.

Henryetta and Vian, week 7: Vian defeated division rival Adair to reach the quarterfinals last season, but Henryetta was eliminated early in the first round. This match marks the midpoint of the conference for District 2A-II-4.
