Hundreds of protesters clashed with police in Kolkata on Tuesday during the “Nabanna Abhijan” demanding the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the arrest of those involved in the rape and murder of a doctor at the RG Kar Hospital.

During the ongoing “Nabanna Abhiyan” march to the State Secretariat, organised by the student group Paschimbanga Chattro Samaj, the West Bengal police used water cannons and tear gas on the Howrah Bridge to disperse the crowd.



Earlier in the day, large numbers of protesters gathered around College Square in Kolkata, where the “Nabanna Abhiyan” march kicked off.

In response to the controversy surrounding the rape and murder of a junior doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the Paschimbanga Chattro Samaj organised a march demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The protesters accuse the Prime Minister of failing to ensure the safety of women, which they say led to the incident in RG Kar, which has sparked national outrage.

Ahead of the “Nabanna Abhijan” march, the West Bengal police had stepped up security measures around the state secretariat, “Nabanna”. In preparation for the protest, the police deployed vajra vehicles, water cannons and riot control units in the area and containers were placed to block the roads.

The West Bengal police on Monday said the approach of the Nabanna Abhijan rally to the Nabanna, the state secretariat, was “illegal” and described it as an attempt to provoke large-scale unrest in Kolkata.

The protesting students have stated that their march will not have any impact on UGC-NET candidates as the exams are scheduled in two shifts. Despite these assurances, many educational institutions have opted to conduct online classes on Tuesday or declared a holiday.

Kolkata Rape and Murder Case: Lie Detector Test

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted two rounds of polygraph tests on Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College. In addition, lie detector tests were conducted on the main accused, Sanjoy Roy.

The Calcutta High Court has given the CBI three weeks’ time to file a progress report on the investigation into financial irregularities at RG Kar Hospital. The report is due by September 17.
