A stylish sports car with a top speed of 174mph and a luxurious interior is now on sale for less than the price of the cheapest new motorbike in the UK.

The model is one of the most recognisable on the road, but second-hand examples have dropped in price to bargain levels.

Porsche has been producing the 911 since 1964, and the car has remained largely the same over the years.

The German company is known for being reluctant to make changes to the design of the model, sticking to the design with the engine in the back.

The last major change came in 1998, when the company switched from air-cooled to liquid-cooled engines. This caused much controversy among fans at the time.

The first generation with the new drivetrain was the 996. An example of this is currently for sale on AutoTrader.

The silver 1998 model has 113,180 miles on the odometer and eight previous owners, but still appears to be in excellent condition.

The standard coupé version had a 3.4-liter six-cylinder boxer engine, which delivered an output of over 400 hp and had a top speed of 280 km/h.

At the time, the car was said to have sold new for £64,000, which would be the equivalent of over £120,000 in 2024.

However, this example is being offered for just £11,000.

That’s over £7,000 cheaper than the Dacia Sandero, which currently holds the title of cheapest new car in the UK at £17,295.

The Porsche comes with a full service history, a new coolant reservoir and a new stainless steel exhaust.

There are, however, a few things to look out for before buying an older 911.

First of all, the 996 was known for its problems with cylinder cracks and leaks at the rear oil seal.

If the engine has code M96.01 or M96.02, it may be worth having it checked by a professional before transferring any money.

Secondly, it may not be the best buy for people living in large cities with active ULEZ/CAZ schemes.

The 996 generation only meets the Euro 3 emissions standard, while the stricter Euro 4 standard currently applies as the limit for environmental taxes.

Motorists living in affected areas could face a hefty bill every time they hit the road.

But if you’re not worried about those two things, then this seems like a great deal.

This came after a hot hatch that Jeremy Clarkson called “one of my all-time favourite cars” went under the hammer for a whopping sum.
