The IWF is the official governing body for weightlifting worldwide and has existed for over 120 years. The federation is best known as the organizer of the World Weightlifting Championship and is a partner of the IOC in the weightlifting segment of the Olympic Games. In a press release, the IWF announced that two of its representatives will join the GEF Working Group of International Federations.

The IWF joins a large number of GEF partners, working with the Federation to popularize esports and grow its global presence, notably through its Global Esports Games events and other projects. GEF works with regional esports federations and companies such as Infinite Reality and NODWIN, in addition to UNESCO and sports federations such as the World Taekwondo Federation.

The GEF and IWF haven’t shared much information about the exact projects planned, only stating that the main goal is to work together to promote, support and develop the global esports ecosystem.

IWF President Mohammed Jalood, commented on the news: “This is a truly exciting new path for our International Federation. In 2025 we will celebrate our 120th anniversary, but our goal is to always remain innovative and ‘young’. Membership of the GEF is a privileged platform to present our sport in another dimension, generating and motivating more fans around the world.

“The possibilities offered by new technologies are already changing the way we do sports. So let’s write a new page in our wonderful history together! We are also pleased to see that the IOC is embracing these new developments.”
