Huawei unveils triple-foldable smartphone

WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) – Huawei plans to introduce the world’s first foldable smartphone, which can transform a phone-sized device into a tablet screen.

The Chinese company shared a teaser on Weibo, revealing a device with a 10-inch display when fully unfolded, with three folding sides in a sort of inverted Z-shape, according to Macrumors.

Richard Yu, the company’s director of consumer and automotive technology, described the upcoming smartphone as a “groundbreaking product.”

In addition to the triple-screen phone, Huawei will also introduce new smartwatches and other accessories on September 10.

Interestingly, Huawei’s launch event will come just hours after Apple’s (AAPL) ‘It’s Glowtime’ event, which will see the company unveil its much-anticipated iPhone 16 series.

The timing of these events suggests that Huawei is looking to challenge Apple’s position in the Chinese market, where the US company dropped out of the top five smartphone vendors by market share in the second quarter of 2023, according to research firm Canalys.
