Issa Rae’s ‘Legal Life’ Is Now Being Taught at Georgia Law School

Rae will make a special visit to the classroom in November.

There’s a class for law students with a nose for Issa Rae. Georgia State College of Law is launching a new course on the actress and entrepreneur’s “Legal Life.”

The class will dissect the legal aspects of Rae’s extensive career, including her Hoorae media company and Viarae prosecco brand. Additionally, students kicked off class on August 21 with a special visit from Rae’s mother and brother. The first day began with a conversation about her career beginnings, including her YouTube web series, “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl.”

The class is taught by Mo Ivory, who called the “Insecure” actress an “inspiring figure to study.”

“Issa Rae has long been at the top of my list of inspirational figures to study, so bringing her remarkable career into the classroom is an exciting opportunity for both my students and me. We’ll explore her journey from YouTube to the big screen, delving deeper into her accomplishments in front of the camera, and the business and legal complexities that fuel her success as a writer, producer, director, entrepreneur, and more,” said Ivory, who is also director of the Center for Entertainment, Sports, and Intellectual Property.

Ivory launched the Entertainment Law program in 2019 to study the legal implications of public figures’ careers. In the past, “Legal Life” students have studied Ludacris, Kandi Burruss and Steve Harvey. Now, Ivory and a select group of students will explain how the Emmy winner achieved her legal success.

She added: “Thanks to the support of her team, we also have the unique opportunity to analyze (Rae’s) real-world deals and discuss how her approach to deals is shaping today’s entertainment landscape. We are incredibly fortunate to have this opportunity.”

Rae is apparently proud to be the subject this semester. The 39-year-old will join the Georgia State class in November to discuss her career and business portfolio.
