Welcome to UBC, Class of 2028

Welcome to UBC, Class of 2028

You’ve probably heard it all: how freshman year was the best time of your orientation leader’s life, how the world opens up once you’re an adult, and how your time at UBC is the perfect opportunity to learn who you are. Blah blah blah. Clichés suck!

But the point is that these clichés are true. At UBC, you are confronted with the reality of (drumroll please): THE REAL WORLD, including finding your place in it.

While you may be terrified of stepping into the dining hall the first week and will probably cry yourself to sleep the first night in your dorm room because you’re absolutely certain you’ll never let your loved ones hug you back home again (you’re just tired, go to sleep), you will learn and grow in unimaginable ways.

You learn that failure is real (and totally okay). You find your passions. You make friends who become family. You join a club (or several) you’ll never really be a part of. You make memories in your dorm. You point out someone in the Nest and say “That guy is my opponent!” to your friend, accidentally loud enough for him to hear you (true story — if you’re reading this, sorry).

You get rained on at homecoming. You write for The Ubyssey (OMG, how did that get in…). You break up, make up, and (maybe) break up again. And you most likely puke in a bush, whether from stress, injections, or a stomach virus.

Experiencing life is what college is all about. On a campus with a million different courses, clubs, cultures, and more — you find your people and you find yourself. Learning who you are and what you care about is a big task — you may not complete it while you’re at UBC, but it’s a place to start.

And when you need someone to rant to or celebrate your victories with, you have your community — and you have us: a newspaper full of students trying to figure ourselves out, just like you. Come visit us in room 2208 at the Nest.

Welcome to UBC, Class of 2028! In the famous words of Hannah Montana, “Life’s what you make it, so let’s make it rock!”
