‘I think you can do anything with AI’

Orlando Bloom says he’d love to return to Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. There’s just one problem: Elves don’t age.

“I don’t know how they would do it,” Bloom admitted in an interview with Variety. “I think with AI today, you can do anything.”

Even if he has to resort to AI to hide the signs of aging, Bloom is still eager to return in Hunt for Gollum. If producer Peter Jackson asked him to jump, he says he’d say, “How high?”

“I mean, he started my whole career,” Bloom said.

Bloom isn’t the only Lord of the Rings alumnus open to returning to Tolkien’s universe. Ian McKellan has said that his character, Gandalf, could appear in future films, and that Warner Bros. hopes he’ll play the iconic wizard.

“When? I don’t know. What’s the script? It’s not written yet. So they have to be quick,” McKellan said. Viggo Mortensen is also open to returning as Aragorn.

As for Bloom, he says he really doesn’t know what director Andy Serkis has planned for the new film. “I talked to Andy[Serkis]and he said they were thinking about how to do things. I was like, ‘How would that even work?’ And he said, ‘Well, AI!’ and I said, ‘Oh, okay!’ It was a pretty magical time in my life, and it’s one of those things where there’s no downside.”

Hunter for Gollum was announced in May, with Serkis attached as director and Jackson as producer. Co-writers Fran Walsh and Phillippa Boyens are also on board to produce the new film. It will be the first of two new Lord of the Rings feature films, and will likely be set sometime between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

Little else is known about the upcoming film. In the meantime, The Rings of Power is currently airing on Prime Video and will continue until October. You can read our review of season 1 here.
