Man who recorded video of rape on Ujjain street arrested

A man who allegedly recorded a video of a woman being raped on a footpath in the busy Koyla Phatak area of ​​Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain has been arrested, police said on Saturday. The Indian Express.

The woman was raped on Wednesday and reported the crime on Thursday. Police said passersby recorded videos of the crime without intervening to stop the perpetrator.

On Saturday, Ujjain police chief Pradeep Sharma said district police and cyber and social media teams had been deployed to track down who had shot and circulated the video of the crime.

Sharma said the suspect was identified as 42-year-old Mohammad Salim, a rickshaw driver.

He has been booked under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections pertaining to disclosing the identity of the victim of certain offences (72), viewing or capturing the image of a woman performing a private act (77) and selling obscene content (297). He has also been booked under Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, which relates to publishing or transmitting obscene material, and Section 4 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, which relates to prohibiting publication of material containing indecent portrayal of women.

Police said they were examining Salim’s phone and questioning him.

The woman accused a man named Lokesh of raping her.

Lokesh was arrested within two hours of the woman’s complaint, police said. “(He) was taken to the police station and interrogated, during which Lokesh admitted to having committed the crime,” a police official said.

The suspect was then brought before the court, which remanded him in custody.

Ujjain city police chief Om Prakash Mishra had earlier said that a video of the crime had been taken as evidence in the case.
