Russo-Ukrainian War: List of major events, day 928 | Russo-Ukrainian War News

As the war enters its 928th day, here are the key developments.

This is the situation on Tuesday, September 10, 2024.

To fight

  • Russia said it destroyed more than 70 Ukrainian drones, including 12 that were headed toward Moscow, in the early hours of Tuesday. The drones led to flight suspensions from the capital’s three airports and there were reports of a fire at an apartment building in Moscow.
  • The Russian Defense Ministry said it captured the Ukrainian village of Memryk, about 20 km (12 miles) east of the strategically important city of Pokrovsk, inflicted losses on Ukrainian forces in at least two other nearby villages and repelled eight enemy attacks in the Donetsk region. Ukraine did not mention Memryk in its daily update.
  • Romania reported finding fragments of a Russian drone in a village near the Danube River, which borders Ukraine, after an overnight raid on Ukrainian river ports.
  • The Commander of the National Armed Forces of Latvia, Lieutenant General Leonids Kalnins, reported that a Russian drone found on the territory over the weekend was of the Shahed type and was carrying explosives.

Politics and diplomacy

  • British Foreign Secretary David Lammy will hold talks with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in London on Tuesday. Among other things, support for Ukraine will be discussed.
  • Vladimir Kara-Murza, a leading critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, urged the West not to offer the Russian leader any “face-saving” way out of the war with Ukraine. In an interview, he told AFP news agency that ending Putin’s rule was the only solution for peace. Kara-Murza, who was serving a 25-year sentence in a Siberian penal colony for treason and other charges for criticizing the war, was released last month in a prisoner swap.
  • China’s top diplomat Wang Yi will visit Russia this week for a security meeting of emerging economies from the BRICS countries, Beijing’s Foreign Ministry said.
  • Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov visited Riyadh, where he met Saudi Arabia’s de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The official Saudi Press Agency said the two discussed “recent international and regional developments.”

Weapons

  • Iran’s senior Revolutionary Guard commander Fazlollah Nozari denied reports that Tehran had supplied Russia with ballistic missiles, describing them as “psychological warfare.” A European Union spokesman said the reports were “credible.” The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that Iran had sent short-range ballistic missiles to Russia.
  • The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said it had summoned Iranian chargé d’affaires Shahriar Amouzegar to warn of “devastating and irreparable consequences” for bilateral relations if the reports turned out to be true.
  • The Cluster Munition Coalition (CMC) reported in its annual report that more than 1,000 people in Ukraine have been killed or injured by cluster munitions since Russia’s large-scale invasion in 2022. The CMC called on all countries to ban these weapons.
  • Defence Minister Pal Jonson said Sweden will send additional military aid to Ukraine worth a total of 4.6 billion Swedish kronor ($443m). The new package will include ammunition for infantry fighting vehicles already donated by Sweden, as well as purchases that would facilitate the future transfer of Gripen fighter jets, which are subject to agreement.
  • According to Defense Chief General Carsten Breuer, Germany’s top military official, North Korea’s arms exports to Russia have strengthened Moscow’s position in Ukraine and allowed the country to maintain its domestic arsenal.
