Former Christian Brother Guilty of Sexual Abuse

Former Christian Brother Guilty of Sexual Abuse

A former teacher and school principal accused of child sexual abuse has been found guilty.

Paul Dunleavy, whose address is on Glen Road in Belfast, was convicted of 36 charges of historical sexual abuse.

The offences are believed to have been committed between 1964 and 1991, when the 88-year-old former Christian Brother worked at four schools in Belfast, Newry and Armagh.

The charges include sexual assault and gross indecency with or against a child.

After five hours of deliberation, the jury unanimously found Dunleavy guilty on 34 of the 36 charges.

Shortly after the judge ordered him to accept a majority verdict on the remaining two charges, the jury reconvened.

Dunleavy was found guilty on the remaining two charges by a majority of 11-1.

The jury, of six men and six women, had already been told that Dunleavy had twice been convicted of a series of sex offences against children in his care at a number of schools where he taught.

He will hear his sentence on October 25.
