Michigan Athletics Announces 7-Element Hall of Honor Class for 2024

Seven former Wolverines will be inducted into the University of Michigan Hall of Honor this year, the school announced Wednesday.

They represent six different teams and span four separate decades. They will be inducted on November 3 after being recognized the day before on the field of Michigan Stadium during Michigan’s American football game against Oregon.

The 2024 class consists of Knox Cameron (men’s soccer), Amanda Chidester (softball), Dan Goldberg (men’s tennis), Curtis Greer (soccer), Ken Hayward (baseball), Denise Muresan (women’s tennis) and Calvin O’Neal (soccer).

O’Neal and Greer were teammates for one season. O’Neal was a Wolverine from 1973 to 1976, and was a team captain and All-American as a senior, when he won his third Big Ten title. The linebacker set a program record that season with 24 tackles in a game against Purdue.

Greer (1976-79) earned All-America honors as a senior. The defensive lineman and tackling machine won three Big Ten titles before being drafted in the first round and spending eight years in the NFL.

Established in 1978, the Hall of Honor recognizes athletes, coaches and administrators. Criteria for consideration include being an NCAA champion or national championship team member, an All-American, Olympic medalist, Olympic team member, professional champion or world championship team medalist/member, NCAA or conference player of the year, conference champion, record holder or all-conference award winner.

Goldberg (1986-1989) is the most successful tennis player in the history of the program. The three-time All-American won 127 singles matches, more than any other Wolverine. He led Michigan to the 1988 Final Four and was the national individual runner-up in 1987. He served as an assistant coach at Michigan for 12 seasons.

Chidester (2009-2012) was a first-team All-American as a junior and a two-time Big Ten Player of the Year. She played all over the field – catcher; first, second and third base; and outfield – and batted .355 for her career. She became the first Wolverine to medal in Olympic softball when she helped the United States to silver at the 2020 Games.

Hayward (1982-85), a three-time All-Big Ten selection, helped Michigan win the Big Ten Tournament and reach the College World Series twice. The infielder holds the program records for games played, batting average (.376) and RBI.

Muresan (2008-2011) was a three-time All-American and the Big Ten Athlete of the Year as a junior and senior, when she led Michigan to Big Ten tennis titles. She won 111 matches, the most in program history at the time of her graduation (currently sixth), and is one of three players in program history to finish a season in the top 10 of the ITA singles rankings.

Cameron (2001-04) is the only player in Michigan men’s soccer history to be named a first-team All-American. In 2003, he led Michigan to the Elite Eight and was named Big Ten Player of the Year. He has the most game-winning goals (12) of any Wolverine and ranks third in career points.
