Canadian stocks higher at close of trading; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.40% By Investing.com

Investing.com – Canadian stocks rose after the close on Friday as gains across sectors and stocks drove higher.

At the close in Toronto, the stock market rose 0.40%, reaching a new record.

The best performers of the session were: New Gold Inc. (TSX:), which rose 7.44% or 0.29 points to close at 4.19. Meanwhile, Calibre Mining Corp (TSX:) rose 7.17% or 0.17 points to close at 2.54 and Canfor Corporation (TSX:) rose 6.98% or 1.03 points to close at 15.79 in late trading.

The worst performers of the session were Energy Fuels Inc. (TSX:), which fell 6.40% or 0.44 points to close at 6.44. Denison Mines Corp (TSX:) fell 3.18% or 0.07 points to close at 2.13 and Empire Company Ltd (TSX:) fell 2.58% or 1.05 points to 39.57.

On the Toronto Stock Exchange, rising stock prices outnumbered falling stocks, at 647 to 302. 92 closed unchanged.

Shares in New Gold Inc (TSX: ) rose to a 5-year high, up 7.44% or 0.29 to 4.19. Shares in Calibre Mining Corp (TSX: ) rose to a 3-year high, up 7.17% or 0.17 to 2.54.

The , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, fell 7.66% to 10.12, a new monthly low.

Gold futures for December delivery rose 1.08% or 27.95 to $2,608.55 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, crude oil for October delivery rose 0.41% or 0.28 to $69.25 a barrel, while the Brent crude contract for November rose 0.21% or 0.15 to $72.12 a barrel.

CAD/USD was unchanged by 0.05% to 0.74, while CAD/EUR was unchanged by 0.05% to 0.66.

US Dollar Index Futures fell 0.22% to 101.12.
