Jack Draper to investigate vomiting problems

Jack Draper says he is “really going to investigate” why he has been ill during a number of important matches.

The Briton reached his first Grand Slam semi-final at the US Open, but was defeated in three sets by world number one Jannik Sinner.

Draper threw up three times on the court during his defeat to the Italian and afterwards spoke of himself as “a pretty anxious person”.

He also fell ill immediately after winning the first round of the Australian Open in January, which he attributes to the “psychological stress” of the situation.

“I’m definitely going home… you know, this has happened a few times, in different situations, I’m really going to look at it,” Draper told BBC sports news correspondent Laura Scott.

“I push my body all the time in training and in my mindset. I don’t have to worry about not doing enough because I do, which suggests that a lot of my issues are mental.

“I will have to work on that and understand myself better to be able to compete at this highest level.

“I am sure I will solve all these problems together with my team, but yes, it is good that I am not completely finished yet.”

The 22-year-old left-handed pitcher was ranked 123rd in the world at this time last year, but next week he will enter the top 20 for the first time.

He added: “I think it’s hugely important to work on the mental side of the game.

“I’m definitely going to look at that side of it a little bit more. You know, I’m constantly working on my breathing, working on things.”
