Reference was made to a director of a local association of a sports organization among the Kore.

It was noted that an executive of a local association of a sports organization under the Korea Sports Association extorted the player’s support fee, but no action was taken.

According to Kim Seung-soo, a member of the National Assembly’s Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee, the Korean Water Ski Wake Sports Association filed a complaint on March 15 for embezzlement and breach of trust. The association alleged that A, vice chairman of the affiliated Jeonnam Association, had extorted player fees and training fees.

In April, he reported to the South Jeolla Provincial Sports Association and requested disciplinary measures, including expulsion of supervisors, but has not received a response yet.

Rep. Kim’s office received a tip-off that A had extorted all support fees by depositing the athlete support fees paid directly to athletes belonging to the Jeollanam-do Provincial Sports Council into his wife’s account during the 2023 Jeonnam National Sports Festival.

In addition, according to lawmaker Kim’s office, A has not paid for the annual support of player training, but has only done so recently, causing a setback for player protection.

Lawmaker Kim criticized: “No action has been taken even though the Korea Sports Council and the local sports council have been notified of extortion of athletes’ fees and their training by local sports organizations.” He added: “The sports association’s punishment to protect and mitigate its own family members goes too far.”
