Critics rank the Toyota RAV4 near last place. The aging SUV is starting to decline, despite its popularity.

The clock is ticking for the Toyota RAV4, which is taking on more modern SUVs. On various lists of the best compact SUVs for 2024 and 2025, the RAV4 is slipping. But it’s still more popular than ever.

Why is the Toyota RAV4 heading towards last place?

According to USNews, the Toyota RAV4 is tied for fourth place with the Nissan Rogue, Mazda CX-50 and Kia Sportage, with each of those SUVs earning a score of 8.7 out of 10.

While fifth place isn’t bad, the RAV4 isn’t ahead of these rivals. It’s just equal. The 2024 Mazda CX-5 takes the top spot with a score of 9.2.

The 2025 Subaru Forester also finished in ninth place, behind the RAV4, with a score of 8.6. The 2024 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross came in last with a score of 7.8.

Critics complain about the Toyota RAV4 for being a bit slow. It is powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. It can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 9.1 seconds, which is behind the average in its class.

Furthermore, comfort could be improved. Small shocks are quickly absorbed, but the ride is somewhat firm and bumpy. There is quite a bit of engine noise at highway speeds and the engine produces a coarse whine.

The interior is spacious and passengers benefit from rear air vents, but the seats are a bit firm and the passenger seat has no height-adjustment controls.

Aside from these issues, it shines as a capable SUV with above-average off-road capabilities. It has ample cargo space for gear, and roof rails provide additional storage. The technology is modern and easy to use, with plenty of physical buttons.

The Toyota RAV4 has a long list of standard features that add to its value. It comes with LED headlights, 17-inch steel wheels, an 8.0-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, satellite radio and a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Overall, the RAV4 is a versatile SUV with great value for the class. But is it time to get more athletic, comfortable and refined?
