20 September 2024 – (Hong Kong) Parents in Hong Kong are being urged to be cautious following reports of fraudulent messages regarding the HK$2,500 Student Grant application. Many have received messages claiming their grant applications were unsuccessful and asking for personal information, leading to widespread suspicion of a scam.

The alarming posts have sparked considerable debate among parents on social media platforms, with some sharing their experiences. One parent said her husband received a scam message just two days after applying for the grant through the “iAM Smart” app, prompting others to raise concerns about possible fraud.

In response to the growing concerns, the Bureau of Education confirmed that it is aware of the suspicious messages circulating online, falsely claiming to be from the “Student Grant Office.” The agency stressed that legitimate communications will only be made through real-time phone calls, official emails, or text messages identified by the sender name “#EDB_STG.” They also clarified that the agency does not use interactive voice response (IVR) systems to contact applicants.

As the new school year begins, parents are reminded to remain vigilant against these scams. The Education Bureau encourages anyone who receives such messages not to share personal information and to report incidents to law enforcement.

With the start of the 2024/25 school year, eligible students attending primary schools, secondary schools, special schools and kindergartens in Hong Kong can apply for the scholarship through the iAM Smart electronic platform. However, parents should be careful and verify all communications regarding the scholarship to avoid falling victim to fraud.
