Second suspect in Uttar Pradesh jewelry store robbery case killed in confrontation with police

A second suspect in the Sultanpur jewellery shop robbery case was gunned down in Unnao on Monday during an encounter with the Uttar Pradesh Police’s special task force.

The meeting took place at Achalganj police station in Unnao district.

During the confrontation, one suspect was injured while another managed to escape. The injured has been identified as Anuj Pratap Singh, son of Dharamraj Singh, a resident of Janapur village, Mohanganj police station, Amethi district.

The injured was immediately sent to the government hospital for treatment. However, after initial medical attention, he was referred to the district hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

More legal proceedings are ongoing, with the forensic investigation team and Achalganj police conducting an investigation.

On September 5, the Special Task Force (STF) killed another suspect, Mangesh Yadav, triggering a political row. The opposition, including the Samajwadi Party, and the Congress termed the encounter as ‘fake’.

On August 28, jewellery worth around Rs 1.5 crore was stolen from a shop in Thatheri market area in Sultanpur town.

In previous operations, the police made great strides in recovering stolen items from the Sultanpur jewellery heist. Acting on a tip-off, they arrested four main suspects – Vivek Singh, Durgesh Singh, Arvind Yadav and Vinay Shukla. During the operation, the authorities recovered 2.25 kilograms of gold, 20 kilograms of silver and a considerable amount of cash. The mastermind behind the heist, Vipin Singh, surrendered to the police the day after the crime.
