Keane tells Arsenal manager Arteta to ‘show some class’ after defending ‘stupid’ star

Roy Keane believes Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta should have “shown a bit of class” and “moved on” after Leandro Trossard’s red card.

The reigning champions and their biggest challengers played out a thrilling match at the Etihad Stadium, with Erling Haaland’s opening goal cancelled out by a stunning strike from Riccardo Calafiori, making his first start for Arsenal.

The star of the group, Gabriel, was the driving force Arsenal took the lead with a header in injury time in the first half, but more drama followed when Leandro Trossard was sent off a few minutes later.

The 10-man Gunners defended heart and soul throughout the second period and wasted time trying to stall, but City managed to make it 2-2 in the closing stages through substitute John Stones.

Arteta was questioned about referee Michael Oliver’s decision to give Trossard a second yellow card for kicking the ball away, two weeks after Declan Rice was shown a second yellow card for the same reason.

“I prefer not to comment,” the Arsenal manager said. “I’ve seen it and it’s so clear, so I’ll leave it to you.

“I was already in big trouble when I tried to solve what happened on the field. It’s not my problem to solve what happens off the field.”

When Arteta heard about an unpunished case of City winger Jeremy Doku kicking the ball away, he said: “That’s what I’m saying. It’s so obvious there’s no need to comment on it. It’s the second time.

“I expect 100 Premier League games this season to be 10-a-side, or 10-a-side, or nine-a-side this season. Let’s see.”

But former Manchester United captain Keane insists Arteta should have shown some class and taken his “medicine” after the incident that saw Trossard sent off at Arsenal.

Talking about Sky SportKeane said: “Managers come out every week and say every decision is against them. Just come out and accept it.

“Deep down he’ll be happy with a point. Show some class, Arsenal manager. He probably deserved the red card, we reacted well and we move on.

“That’s the end. Take your medicine and move on. Show some class.”

On the wider trend of managers doing the same, Keane added: “Wouldn’t it be good if a manager came out after a game and just said, ‘Yeah, you know what, he was a bit silly, it was a yellow card.

“Every manager comes out every week and says, ‘No, it wasn’t a foul, that wasn’t it, something happened five minutes earlier.’

“Just come out and be big enough… players do crazy things on a football pitch, come out and show a bit of class and say, ‘The referee gave him the chance to send him off. We’re disappointed but we move on.’”
