‘Bit of a mistake’: BBC Weather app predicts wind speeds of 15,759mph in Britain | British weather

The BBC told people not to “worry” after the weather app said Britain was being hit by a hurricane on Thursday morning.

The broadcaster said Britain was not expecting “hurricane-force winds” of 15,759 miles per hour, contrary to information on its weather site and app.

BBC Breakfast presenter Naga Munchetty asked on-air weather presenter Carol Kirkwood what was going on. “A lot of people are contacting you this morning, and I’m sure you’ll know that at the weather center as well,” she said. “The BBC app provides quite confusing information. Can you explain?”

Kirkwood replied: “That is certainly true, we are currently experiencing a technical glitch. It shows wind speeds that are way too fast. In fact, hurricane force, and that is of course not the case at all, so please don’t worry. We are, as you say, well aware of it and we are working on it. We are trying to resolve it now, so hopefully that will be the end of it.”

On It’s an unfortunate data problem. Sorry, we’re working on it.”

A bit of a problem with the BBC Weather app at the moment – needless to say, Britain isn’t expecting hurricane force winds of 15,000mph. It’s an unfortunate data error. Sorry, we’re working on it. pic.twitter.com/W7QSTbpgDn
