Xzavier Thompson continues to shine for Millwood football

EDMOND – Good things happen when Xzavier Thompson gets his hands on the football.

At 6-foot-4 and 140 pounds, the Millwood senior isn’t the biggest man on the field.

But for Thompson, size isn’t an issue.

Most high school football players simply aren’t fast enough to keep up with the standout receiver and defensive back who won the Class 3A state title in the 400-meter dash last spring.

That was abundantly clear Friday as Class 2A-I second-ranked Millwood posted a 41-7 road victory against No. 6 Oklahoma Christian School.

Thompson finished with two touchdowns when he returned a punt 59 yards in the second quarter and caught a 39-yard pass from junior quarterback C.J. Turnbull in the third quarter.

Thompson, who has an offer from Arizona State, is in his fourth season as a starter and is a veteran leader for the Falcons (5-1, 3-0 District 2A-I-1) at this stage of his high school career.

“So far I’m off to a good start,” Thompson said. “I have scored every game. I’m just trying to reach my goal, my 1,000 receiving yard mark, so it’s just a process.

Thompson’s punt return for a touchdown against OCS (5-1, 2-1) showed how dangerous he can be when he gets the ball.

It didn’t seem like Thompson had much to work with at first, but he made a few quick cuts and was suddenly off to the races down the sideline, blasting past the OCS defenders.

“He’s electric,” Millwood coach Darwin Franklin said. “He’s deceptively smooth with some of the things he does. And some of the things he’s going to do, we’re yelling and saying, ‘Don’t do this, don’t do this, don’t do this.’ And before you know it, he does it anyway and makes you pay for it.”

Other than a 28-25 loss to Heritage Hall, ranked second in Class 3A, Millwood has been dominant in every game against an Oklahoma opponent this year.

The Falcons have reached the Class 2A state championship the past two years, losing to Washington both times, and they are focused.

These have been great seasons, but Thompson and his team want more.

“We come into every game like it’s our last,” Thompson said. “No postponing matches. We just have to keep our feet on their necks so we can get back into state and come through with the W this time.

From junior quarterback CJ Turnbull to players like Thompson, sophomore running back and linebacker Anthony Keys and senior running back and linebacker Cameron Carter, Millwood has no shortage of weapons.

The Falcons also play great defense, allowing just nine points per game.

“They continue to communicate well,” Franklin said. “As long as they continue to communicate well, they will do an excellent job. The better we communicate, the better off we are.”
