CBSE is offering a 25% relaxation in attendance requirements for students facing specific circumstances such as medical emergencies and participation in sports tournaments, provided they submit necessary documentation

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) recently announced guidelines regarding attendance requirements for students preparing for the Class 10 and Class 12 board exams in 2025. According to the notification, all students must maintain a minimum attendance of 75 percent to qualify for to qualify for the board exams scheduled for February 2025.

The official notice read: “Schools are more than just places for academic learning; they also play an important role in the overall development of students. Besides providing academic information, schools facilitate extracurricular activities, peer learning, character development, inculcation of values, cooperation, teamwork, diversity and inclusion and many other things. As a result, students’ consistent attendance at school is critical to their overall development.”

The board is offering a 25 percent relaxation in attendance requirements for students facing specific circumstances such as medical emergencies, participation in national or international sports tournaments or other serious reasons, provided they submit necessary documentation. However, students with an attendance percentage of less than 75 percent will not be allowed to appear for the CBSE Class 10 and Class 12 exams.

In addition, the board has directed all member schools to communicate the attendance requirements to students and parents, highlighting the possible consequences of non-compliance. The board also emphasized that if students are found absent during surprise inspections by the CBSE without proper leave details, they will be deemed not to be attending school regularly and will not be allowed to appear for the final exams.

During a medical emergency, the student must submit a leave request and valid medical documentation shortly after taking the leave. For other situations, they must inform the school of their absence with a valid reason, only in writing.

According to the board, no adjustments in attendance records will be allowed once a school reports cases of attendance deficiencies to the CBSE. Attendance is calculated from January 1 of the academic session.
