Class of ’24 warned of the long-term consequences of exam fraud

Hendrick Makaneta says the consequences are dire, with possible long-term effects on a candidate’s future prospects.

“Learners need to take these exams seriously, and they need to know that there are consequences for cheating, and there need to be concrete examples of those who have suffered, so they should avoid cheating.”

Makaneta’s comments follow the massive cheating scandal involving Mpumalanga’s class of 2022.

The education sector’s decision to withhold the results of more than 400 exams has been the subject of a lawsuit.

The department recently said it would appeal the ruling ordering it to release the results.

Makaneta believes the department should consider other options at this time.

“I think the department needs to find a way to look at other measures to ensure that students pay for their transgressions so that they can create a future for themselves.”
