Wayzata defeats Eagan in Class 3A Minnesota girls state soccer semifinals at US Bank Stadium

No. 1 seed Wayzata wasted no time.

The Trojans jumped ahead with two goals in the first 13 minutes and didn’t give up. They scored three more goals to put away No. 4 Eagan 5-0 on Tuesday in the Class 3A high school girls soccer semifinals at US Bank Stadium. .

Wayzata (18-1-1) will face the semifinal winner of East Ridge and Edina in the 3A state championship on Friday at 10:15 a.m. Wayzata lost to Edina in the title match last year, 2-1.

Sophomore midfielder Alex Villueux had a hat trick – a third of her now nine goals this season – and added an assist for the Trojans.

Tuesday’s semifinal victory wasn’t much different from the Trojans’ semifinal last year, when the team scored three times in the first 15 minutes to beat Maple Grove 5-1.

Gophers committed and Wayzata forward Tenley Senden put the Trojans ahead in the second minute, carrying the ball 60 yards downfield after freshman outside back Carolyn Voss forced an Eagan turnover. Villueux poked home the rebound with a save from one corner kick and then headed in a second corner kick, giving the Trojans a 3-0 lead before halftime. Sophomore Lauren Craig recorded her 22nd assist of the season – third most in the state – on Villueux’s header.

Senior forward Sophie Hawkinson assisted Villueux’s final goal and notched one herself, finishing a ball shot in by Villueux from the right flank in the second half.
