“(Our freshmen and sophomores) have made significant contributions along the way,” Wayzata head coach Tony Peszneker said. “For Alex and Lauren, two players who have played important roles all season, that says a lot for them, on this stage, in these parts of the game, when they are only sophomores.”

Senior forward Sophie Hawkinson assisted Villueux’s final goal and notched one herself, finishing a ball shot in by Villueux from the right flank in the second half.

The Wayzata backline handled an Eagan team adroitly that scored 51 goals this season and won the Section 3 of Class 3A, securing their second consecutive trip to state. Eagan applied some moments of pressure in the second half, but failed to get a shot on target.

“We definitely talked as a back line, knowing that their forwards are super quick and aggressive,” Wayzata senior defender Ava Nayar said. “Just keep them in front of us, don’t let them turn us around, and make a statement that no team can get past Wayzata.”

Seven-time state champion Wayzata last won a title in 2012, but has been to the big dance more than any other team in the state, including the past three years.
