A Class 12 student jumped to his death from Jam Gate, a historic site in Madhya Pradesh’s Khargone, after his school authorities objected to his use of a mobile phone and attempts to click selfies on the premises, police said .

17-year-old tribal student Raj Osari, who was studying in a government higher secondary school at Gulwad in Mandleshwar area and staying in a government-run hostel, ended his life before Thursday afternoon despite attempts by his family members and a security guard to stop him from taking the extreme step, a police official said.

“Raj jumped out of the Jam Gate and was subsequently found in a ditch. As he tried to jump, his family members and the security guard posted at the spot asked him not to do so, but he did not listen to them and took the extreme step,” said Khargone district Superintendent of Police Dharamraj Meena.

He was rushed to a government hospital in Mandleshwar where doctors declared him brought dead, the official said, adding that he was a resident of Kakad Khodri village in Mandleshwar region.

The deceased’s uncle Jitendra Osari told police in a statement that hostel inspector Prakash Girwal had called him to complain about Raj’s use of mobile phones in school, the police official said.

“School principal KC Saand also objected to Raj taking selfies at school on Wednesday. But he threatened to commit suicide or run away from the school,” he said, after which the principal asked the hostel superintendent to call Raj’s relatives and resolve the matter.

But when his relatives, Krishna and his son Ganesh, came to meet him at school, Raj ran away. They all went looking for him, but could not find him. Raj later came to the school and the hostel superintendent immediately informed his family members. They reached the hostel again at 9.30 pm but Raj escaped by scaling the hostel’s boundary wall, the official said.

“He came back to the school late at night and ran away from the hostel after breakfast on Thursday morning. The director asked the staff to catch him but they could not,” he said.

His mobile phone was also recovered at the scene. Based on the investigation conducted so far, there is a possibility that he may have taken this step out of fear of being scolded by his family members, the SP said.

Police are investigating the matter thoroughly as there could be another motive behind the incident, he said.
