COP29 live: Recriminations as countries say 0 billion COP29 deal falls short for poorer countries

Key countries ‘excluded’ from discussions on draft dealpublished at 12:09 Greenwich Mean Time November 23

I just heard from a source close to AOSIS, a group of small island states that are highly vulnerable to climate change.

They told me that the minister leading AOSIS in meeting room 3 (where the final deal is being debated) told the room that his group had been excluded from writing the latest text. As a reminder, this text has not yet been published and so we have not seen it.

“AOSIS and many of the subgroups within the G77 were not part of the discussion that gave rise to these unbalanced texts,” AOSIS President Cedric Schuster told ministers, according to my source.

G77 is a large group of developing countries.

“We have asked for the space for you to be involved in the process, facilitating this discussion,” Schuster continued.

Just a reminder that the COP talks are supposed to be by consensus, with all countries having to agree on the final deal.

When I asked if they could walk away from these talks, my source said, “that’s up to the leaders of the nations.”
