Maroa-Forsyth, Monticello and Mt. Zion eye state titles

Maroa-Forsyth, Monticello and Mt. Zion eye state titles

State finals football is finally here and three local teams are in action tomorrow. We caught up with all three programs ahead of their state finals this week to get everyone ready for our triple-header.

The first is Maroa-Forsyth who will play in the Class 2A final against Chicago Christian. Both teams enter the finals at 12-1, with the Trojans recording a dominant victory over Johnston City 41-22. Maroa-Forsyth has only two single-digit games this season, including their lone loss against Williamsville and their quarterfinal thriller against Quincy Notre Dame. The Trojans have seen several of their senior and junior leaders rewrite the school record books in recent weeks and they are looking to add a 2A state title to their impressive season if they can beat the Knights at Hancock Stadium.

In Class 3A, Monticello defeated Tolono Unity in as dramatic a fashion as you’ll find in high school football, and they’ve advanced to the finals where they’ll face Montini. The Broncos’ most recent title came in 2015, while Monticello had an undefeated season in 2018. Unity is the only team to beat this senior-heavy Monticello squad since week one, meaning the Sages have plenty of momentum heading into the finals.

Finally, our final game of the evening, set for 7:00 PM, will feature Mount Zion coming off a win in Normal over University High. Now extending their win streak to seven games, the Braves have shown an impressive ability to stop multiple types of opponents on their path as a 12-seed, pitting them against Carterville, Peoria Notre Dame, Breese Central and U-High. They now look at a fellow 10-win team in DePaul College Prep while Mt. Zion looks to win their first ever state title.
