Napoli have agreed a £25.4million (€30million) deal with Manchester United for Scott McTominay, which would ease the club’s pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Manuel Ugarte for the Red Devils.

The transfer fee includes a significant sell-on clause, but the deal is subject to personal terms agreed between McTominay and the Serie A club.

McTominay, a product of Manchester United and a player who scored 29 goals in 255 games for his boyhood club, came on as a substitute in the final 11 minutes of United’s 2-1 defeat at Brighton on Saturday.

He has entered the final year of his contract at Old Trafford, with United having the option to extend his deal for a further 12 months.

While the club will not make Ugarte’s transfer from PSG entirely dependent on a sale, it is thought a permanent departure of McTominay would make this easier.

United remain in talks with PSG over Ugarte, with both clubs preferring a permanent move over a loan for the Uruguay international, but a loan with an obligation to buy has not been ruled out.

Napoli are also interested in McTominay’s Scottish counterpart Billy Gilmour and want to complete deals for both sides, but a sale may be required to sign both the Brighton midfielder and McTominay.

The club are also trying to sign Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea, while Victor Osimhen could head the other way in a separate deal.

Juve in talks over Sancho loan

Meanwhile, Napoli’s Serie A rivals Juventus remain in talks with United over a deal for striker Jadon Sancho.

Juve want to sign Sancho on loan, while United would prefer a permanent deal – or a loan with a commitment. However, a compromise cannot be ruled out.

United will have to weigh up the benefits of a potential loan with the transfer window only five days away.

A loan move for Sancho would take most, if not all, of his salary off the books, and United would also receive a loan fee.

Sancho’s contract situation also plays a role: the player has two years left on his contract, with an option for another year.

Playing regularly for the first team will help maintain Sancho’s market value and give United some breathing space next summer.

Sancho travelled to Brighton for the United match on Saturday but was left out of the matchday squad.

Juventus are looking for three wingers. In addition to Sancho, they are on the verge of signing Francisco Conceicao from Porto and Nico Gonzalez from Fiorentina.

Conceicao comes on a direct loan, while Gonzalez gets a loan with a purchase obligation.”
