Caroline Garcia’s outburst is more than justified

Caroline Garcia’s outburst is more than justified

Hate affects tennis players of all categories, toxic and useless, but annoying, terribly annoying, especially for athletes who constantly strive to achieve their goals. Like all professionals in all work environments, tennis players are subject to moments of ups and downs.

It is normal that even a champion loses a match – as a favorite – against an outsider. A situation that is often not appreciated by the haters who hide behind a smartphone or a notebook. Especially not if these haters are sports bettors.

After the unexpected defeat in the first round of the US Open against the Mexican Zarazua, Caroline Garcia wanted to make her voice heard on social media. In a long post on Instagram, the French woman expressed her frustration with haters and gamblers.

The Frenchwoman was inundated with negative messages and wanted to expose the hatred that many alleged fans harbor towards athletes and celebrities.

“These are some of the messages I have received lately after losing matches. These are just a few. There are hundreds. And now, at 30, even though they still hurtt, because at the end of the day I’m just a normal girl who works hard and tries her best. I have the means and the effort to protect myself from this hate.

But still, this is not okay. It worries me when I think about the younger players coming up and having to deal with this. People who haven’t fully developed as people and who can really be affected by this hate. You would think it wouldn’t bother us. But it does. We are human and sometimes when we receive these messages we are already emotionally broken after a great loss.. And they can be harmful.

Many before me have raised this issue. And still no progress has been made. Social media platforms do not prevent it, even though AI has advanced so much. Tournaments and sports continue to partner with gambling companies, who continue to attract new people to unhealthy gambling. The days of cigarette brands sponsoring sports are long gone. And yet here we are, promoting gambling companies that actively destroy people’s lives. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying they should be banned, because people are free to do what they want with their money.

But maybe we shouldn’t promote them. Besides, if someone decides to tell me these things in public, they could get in trouble. So why are we free to do whatever we want online? Shouldn’t we reconsider online anonymity? I know the people who write these horrible posts aren’t going to change because of this. But maybe you, the next time you see a post from an athlete, a singer, or someone else who has failed or lost, Don’t forget that he or she is also a human being, doing his or her best in life. Be kind. Give love. Enjoy life. Darling,” she wrote.

A clear message, which shows how the situation is getting out of hand. And Caroline is right, because haters and gamblers ruin tennis. They undermine the mental health of athletes. Not everyone can handle the pressure well, there are also people who can’t keep it up. Let’s think about how much this problem can affect tennis players in the lower regions of the rankings. It is a plague that ATP and WTA should think about, because it is getting worse.
