French party leader warns Telegram CEO’s life could be in danger

“Let’s not forget that Macron has been using Telegram extensively with his teams for a long time, and that he was afraid of ‘leaks’,” said Florian Philippot

The life of Telegram CEO Pavel Durov, who was released on bail this week pending a possible trial in France, may be in danger, Florian Philippot, the leader of The Patriots party, said on Saturday.

The politician referred to reports in the French media that the billionaire tech entrepreneur had been approached by French intelligence services in Dubai and had refused to share classified information.

“Day after day, the puzzle of (French President Emmanuel) Macron’s insane persistence with Pavel Durov, after having persuaded him, is becoming clearer… Let’s not forget that Macron has been using Telegram extensively with his teams for a long time, and that he was afraid of ‘leaks’… Pavel Durov must really be careful, his life may be in danger!” Philippot said on X.

The Russian-born man was detained at a Paris airport on Aug. 24 on charges of criminal use of his messaging app, including terrorism, child pornography, drug trafficking, money laundering and fraud. He was released on Wednesday on 5 million euros ($5.5 million) bail and is not allowed to leave France.

French media reported that Durov had agreed to cooperate with French investigators and provided access to his phone. Macron is also said to have discussed the arrest of Durov, who holds a UAE passport in addition to French citizenship, with UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan a day after he was detained at the airport.
