Michigan State football offers Duke commit Bariate Kara

The Michigan State Spartans have had a successful recruiting haul of 16 commits in the 2025 cycle. The recruiting class is coming to an end for both parties involved with the season that has begun. However, head coach Jonathan Smith and his staff aren’t done yet.

On Sunday, they offered highly touted three-star edge rusher Bariate Kara from Loganville, Georgia. Kara has already committed to Duke.

Kara was originally rated an 86. In 247Sports’ recruiting updates, he rose to a marginal four-star rating.

“Duke commit Bariate Kara makes a significant jump on 247Sports’ 2025 defensive line board with a rating increase from a strong three-star 86 to a high three-star 89, which moves him roughly 100 spots into the top 50 in the country at his position,” recruiting analyst Gabe Brooks wrote. “At 6-foot-1 and 265 pounds, Kara has a big frame with ample bulk. He displays impressive linear power with the point-of-attack strength expected of a front-line defender of his size. Huge hands and above-average arm length contribute to his ability to play with punch at the line of scrimmage. In his first five games this season for Loganville (Ga.) Christian Academy, Kara has 39 tackles, seven for loss and two sacks, including 11- and 13-tackle performances in the past two games for LCA. Even young for his class, Kara has tremendous long-term potential as a versatile front-line stalwart.”

Kara is ranked as the 39th best edge rusher in the class of 2025, according to 247Sports. In the state of Georgia, he is ranked 40th. Georgia is one of the best football states in the country, along with Texas and California. In the Deep South, it gives Florida a run for its money when it comes to talent.

A respected football fanatic once told me that he would rather pick a three-star player from Georgia than a four-star player from elsewhere.

Smith’s staff has completed several recruiting comebacks in this class, most notably with cornerback Aydan West and offensive lineman Justin Bell (and defensive lineman Derrick Simmons). They haven’t completely turned over a recruit yet this cycle.

The aggression shows that Smith’s staff will target whoever they want, regardless of the odds.
