Fire chiefs have blamed an exploding e-bike battery for a devastating fire that ripped through a house.

One person was rescued on Saturday evening as flames engulfed the property in Leicester.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service says a lithium battery in the e-bike overheated and caused the fire.

Dramatic photos on Facebook show the charred remains of the bicycle and the stairs of the building.

The fire brigade said: ‘Green Watch was present at a house fire involving an e-bike that was under load.

‘One person was successfully rescued from the first floor. Great teamwork together with colleagues from the Western, Eastern and Wigston stations.

“It takes seconds for a lithium-ion battery fire to spread.”

The fire department reminded e-bike owners to use the correct charger, never leave the device unattended and allow the battery to cool before charging.
