Lawsuit over ban on Ivy League athletic scholarships dismissed

A federal judge has dismissed a class-action lawsuit from current and former student athletes challenging the Ivy League’s ban on athletic scholarships. Reuters reported.

The lawsuit, filed last year, alleged that Brown, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia and Cornell Universities, Dartmouth College and the University of Pennsylvania illegally conspired to restrict financial aid by banning athletic scholarships – a policy which, according to prosecutors, amounts to price fixing. and denies athletes proper compensation.

Judge Alvin Thompson, a U.S. district judge in Connecticut, wrote that prosecutors had failed to establish an antitrust violation and show that the league’s policies harmed competition. The plaintiffs may appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
