Lineman students compete in rodeo

NEWPORT, Ark. (KAIT) – A different types of rodeo was held for students at a Region 8 university.

On Monday, November 4, Arkansas State University Newport held the High Voltage Rodeo for its High Voltage Lineman Tech program.

Several dozen students participated in the rodeo, which tested various lineman skills.

“We have four events here. One of them is Hurt Man. Lifeline work is a dangerous job. So if someone gets hurt at the top of the pole, you have to be able to save them,” said program director Kenny Browning.

There was also a cross arm exchange and long stick events.

“We have a switch and a switch cylinder, and they have to raise that switch cylinder, place it in the switch and close it. It’s really difficult today with all that wind, but they are doing their best,” said Browning.

Student Max Brooks said the class was something the class looked forward to all year.

“It’s a competitive thing here, with all these guys competing. We’ve really been looking forward to it the last few weeks and it’s just a good thing to be here with all our family,” Max said.

There were several student families in attendance from southeastern Arkansas.

Brooks said class bragging rights are on the line.

“It’s not actually about climbing fast, it’s about working fast. You have to be able to work quickly. And a lot of these guys are the best at working, and that’s a big deal in this,” Brooks said.

After the rodeo, the class will complete the program in May before going on an internship.
