Fernando Alonso joins Lewis Hamilton in a TV complaint about a major F1 mistake

Fernando Alonso joins Lewis Hamilton in a TV complaint about a major F1 mistake

Fernando Alonso has lashed out at Pirelli, claiming Formula 1 does not have the right tires for when it rains.

Interlagos presented a challenge for the drivers as the wet weather made grip a luxury and Alonso has criticized the tires supplied.

Fernando Alonso criticizes the quality of Pirelli tires

Since 2011, F1 tires have been supplied exclusively by Pirelli, but full wet tires are being used less and less.

While that is partly due to the FIA not wanting to risk crashes, Alonso also suggested they were simply not good enough for the ‘top of the range’ category.

“It wasn’t ideal conditions, but we also don’t have the (right) tires for the top class of the sport,” he said DAZN.

“When it rains a little, we always suffer from aquaplaning, accidents always happen… I think Franco (Colapinto) even behind the safety car… sometimes you can’t even follow the safety car. We have to improve that.”

Brazil was a miserable race for Alonso, who has not finished in the top 10 since Singapore. Towards the end of the Grand Prix, Alonso said on team radio that he was only continuing with the race to honor the mechanics.

“We had a better car in qualifying and then we had to change parts of the car and move to other components with less performance,” Alonso said.

“We were already doing poorly in the race with several floors and other parts that we already discovered were working worse, but we didn’t have any good spare parts. We were slower in the race.

“We also had problems with the brakes. Lance (Stroll) had it on the formation lap and I had it on all the restarts behind the safety car.

“All the braking went to the back of the car and it was like pulling a handbrake.

“The car suffered a lot from porpoises in the second part of the race. Under normal circumstances I would not have finished the race.

“But I had to do it for the mechanics, also for me because I suffered a bit before coming here, for the people in Valencia who are in much worse situations than the rebound in which I suffered.”

Alonso’s comments come after Lewis Hamilton bumped into F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali during a live interview during the Brazilian Grand Prix weekend, prompting him to be “made aware” of the poor quality of the wet tire, causing qualifying could not be held on the usual Saturday.
