Man with four previous prison sentences for drug trafficking caught with Class A seizure at home

Man with four previous prison sentences for drug trafficking caught with Class A seizure at home

A man has been sentenced to prison for being involved in the supply of heroin and cocaine worth thousands of pounds.

Jonathan Reed, 51, was caught by police twice with significant quantities of the Class A substances.

The High Court in Edinburgh heard that Reed had previously been to prison four times for drug trafficking.

Prosecutor Dale Hughes told Judge John Morris KC that officers arrived at Reed’s home on August 23, 2020 and found cocaine with a maximum street value of £2,000 in the property. They also found heroin with a maximum street value of £2,030.

The deputy attorney then told the court that on May 17, 2022, police went to another home where Reed was living with a woman he was in a relationship with at the time.

Mr Hughes added: “When officers arrived at the scene they could hear sounds of a man and a woman shouting from that address. Police then entered the premises using common law powers.

“There were drugs in the apartment.”

Detectives subsequently seized more drugs: the cocaine found at this address had a maximum street value of £4,640, while the heroin found was worth £660.

Police also seized a black Nokia phone and found a text message from someone wanting to buy something from Reed.

Mr Hughes added: “In this message the person using the mobile phone is referred to as Jon, which matches the name of the accused Jonathan Reed.”

Mr Hughes also said that during the earlier raid, Reed’s DNA was found on a bag containing drugs.

He added: “A forensic biology report by the Crown found that DNA traces from the zips of the toiletry bag matched Jonathan Reed’s DNA.”

The story came to light after Reed pleaded guilty to involvement in the supply of illegal drugs.

Judge Morris deferred sentence for Reed to complete background reports. Judge Morris remanded Reed, who is due to be sentenced next month, in custody.
