BMW and Venture recall 1.36 million cars in China over potential Takata airbag risks: Reuters

MUNICH (dpa-AFX) – China’s State Administration for Market Regulation has announced that BMW (BMW.L, BAMXF.PK, BAMXY.PK) and its joint venture will recall 1.36 million vehicles in the country due to potential risks associated with Takata airbags, according to a Reuters report.

The market watchdog said the recall will be split between two companies: BMW Brilliance Automotive, a joint venture based in northeastern China, will recall 598,496 locally produced vehicles, while BMW China Automobile Trading is recalling 759,448 imported vehicles.

The recall applies immediately to vehicles from 2003 to 2017 models, specifically those where the steering wheel has been replaced by the owner themselves, which may have resulted in the installation of defective Takata airbags.

The German car manufacturer will replace the driver’s front airbag free of charge if defects are found during inspection.

According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, BMW recalled 394,000 vehicles in the U.S. in July due to defective Takata airbags.
