Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Flagbearer of the NPP, has reiterated his passion for transforming Ghana into a digital hub for Africa by training one million Ghanaians in IT skills.

The vice president first announced this policy in February of this year, when he delivered his major policy address to the nation.

Speaking at the launch of the 2024 NPP Manifesto in Takoradi, Dr Bawumia reaffirmed this policy, stressing that it is part of his broader vision to create a digital Ghana, improve the various sectors of the economy and provide jobs to the youth.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I want to create a Ghana where we use technology, data and systems for inclusive economic growth.”

“I want Ghana to develop the digital talent we need for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. This means providing hundreds of thousands of young people with digital and software skills. This, together with other policies, will create jobs for the youth, including school leavers,” said doctor Bawumia.

He emphasized; “In partnership with the private sector, we will train at least 1,000,000 young people in IT skills, including software developers, to create employment opportunities globally.”

“I want us to use digital technology, STEM, robotics and artificial intelligence to transform agriculture, healthcare, education, manufacturing, fintech and public services.”

As part of his “Digital Ghana”, Dr. Bawumia stressed his goal of closing the digital divide by achieving near 100% internet penetration.

“We have already made a lot of progress in this direction by increasing internet penetration from 34% in 2016 to about 70% in 2023, more than double. The task in the next four years is to go from 72% to over 90%, as in developed countries. It is possible,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia further assured that under his chairmanship there will be more focus on TVET and STEM, among others.

“Ladies and gentlemen, to prepare our children for the workplace of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, I will improve the positioning of the education system in STEM, robotics, artificial intelligence and vocational skills to meet the demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and create jobs. My government would make coding and robotics standard in high school.”

“My government will also support the establishment of a National Open University Ghana, in partnership with the private sector, with a focus on ICT, TVET and STEM.”
