Illinois American Water Announces Completion of Construction Project at Hardin Village Water Treatment Plant

Illinois American Water Announces Completion of Construction Project at Hardin Village Water Treatment Plant

The installation of a sodium permanganate chemical feed system at the Illinois American Water water treatment plant in the village of Hardin was completed this summer. The sodium permanganate feed system has been operating successfully for the past month. Early indications show a noticeable improvement in the historical aesthetic discoloration problems in the community’s water system.

The installation of the sodium permanganate feed system is an important step in strategically addressing aesthetic concerns in the Hardin community water system. Sodium permanganate is a chemical oxidant that is widely used in the community water treatment systems to control taste, odors, biological growth, zebra mussels, and to remove manganese and iron. It provides better control of the natural iron and manganese levels that are present in the raw groundwater. The removal of iron and manganese will help address the historical aesthetic concerns of the water, including taste and appearance that have a long history in the community water system.
