OysterLink survey reveals restaurant workers feel pressured to work while sick

Nearly 75% of respondents said they always or often feel pressured to work despite illness, while only 25% said they rarely or never feel the need to come to work while sick. The survey was conducted online among hospitality professionals in the first half of 2024.

“Restaurant workers are essential to communities and their wellbeing directly impacts the quality and safety of service,” said Milos Eric, General Manager at OysterLink. “It’s critical to address the systemic pressures that force them to choose between their health and their jobs, and to provide platforms that support both their wellbeing and professional growth.”

According to research by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 40 cases of food poisoning have been linked to sick restaurant workers. Most restaurants have sick-employee policies, as recommended by the FDA Food Code. These rules require employees to inform managers if they are sick, but a third of these policies do not list the exact symptoms that should keep sick employees from working.

To resolve this issue and understand when it is important for restaurant workers to stay home, you can consult OysterLink’s guide: How To Call In Sick To Work.
