Harry Kane: Bayern Munich striker could end wait for trophy under Vincent Kompany

Kane signed a four-year contract with Bayern in August 2023 for an initial sum of €100 million (£86.4 million) plus bonuses, making Spurs their all-time top scorer with 280 goals in 435 games.

Despite his goals, Kane’s first season in Germany was disappointing. Bayern were knocked out of the German Cup by third division club Saarbrücken and lost in the semi-finals of the Champions League to eventual winners Real Madrid.

Matthaus, who led West Germany to World Cup glory in 1990, believes Kane will still win trophies now that Tuchel has left.

“The last two years Bayern Munich was not a family. Bayern Munich was a one-man show, and that one-man show was Thomas Tuchel,” he added.

“He is a good coach, but not for Bayern Munich.”

Matthaus claimed that morale in the dressing room was low because former Chelsea manager Tuchel doubted certain players.

“It didn’t go down well in the dressing room because when you’re (Joshua) Kimmich, when you’re (Leon) Goretzka, players who made history at Bayern Munich, who won titles, and now Tuchel comes and says he’s looking for a number six? Saying I’m not good enough?

“The atmosphere was not good because everyone thought: ‘I’m not good enough for Bayern Munich anymore, but I’ve won eight titles in the last eight years, I’ve won the Champions League and I play for the German national team. What does he want?’

“This was a big problem because he didn’t give the players confidence. He lost a lot of players who were very important for Bayern Munich.”
