NCERT proposes ‘new evaluation model’ for class 12 school board results: ‘Weighting of marks to be adjusted from…’

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has proposed a new evaluation model for class 12. The model suggests that the performance of classes 9, 10 and 11 should be included in the board results of class 12, news agency ANI reported, citing the NCERT report.

The report titled ‘Establishing Equivalence across Education Boards’ with proposed changes was released last month. This includes a progressive assessment approach for grades 10 and 12, with the new framework dividing the academic year into two terms. The grade 12 board results should now include grades from grades 9, 10 and 11, according to the report’s recommendations.

It was further noted that the weighting of formative and summative grades will be adjusted progressively from grade 9 to grade 12, with more weight being given to summative assessment as the student moves through higher grades. The report states: “The weighting of formative and summative grades will be adjusted progressively from grade 9 to grade 12, with more emphasis on summative assessment as students progress through grades.”

The report states that the new assessment model will take a comprehensive approach that balances formative (ongoing) and summative (final attainment) assessment methods to provide a holistic picture of student progress.

With an emphasis on formative and summative assessments with different weightage distributions, the framework proposed, “Specifically, class 9 will have a 7 percent formative distribution and a 30 percent summative distribution, class 10 will have an equal distribution of 50 percent formative and summative distribution, class 11 will have a 40 percent formative distribution and 60 percent summative distribution, and class 12 will have a 30 percent formative and 70 percent summative ratio,” ANI reported.

The proposed assessment framework proposes to assess the cumulative performance of students over the years in the final grade 12 board result. It proposed a weighting of 15 percent for grade 9, 20 percent for grade 10, 25 percent for grade 11 and 40 percent for grade 12.

The proposed two-term division for grades 10 and 12 includes classroom assessments through HPCs, portfolio assessments, self-assessments, peer assessments, teacher observation, group work and laboratory activities. In addition, term II includes project work, viva voice paper presentations and group discussions.
