Madison Keys wins in straight sets to reach US Open third round

American Madison Keys eased into the third round of the US Open on Wednesday with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over incoming freshman Maya Joint of Texas, while reigning Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova became the third top-10 female team to bow out of this year’s tournament.

No. 14 Keys, a 2017 US Open finalist and crowd favorite, needed just an hour to advance.

Krejcikova, seeded eighth, lost to qualifier Elena-Gabriela Ruse (world No. 122) 6-4, 7-5 to join No. 9 Maria Sakkari and No. 10 Jelena Ostapenko, who were ousted early from Flushing Meadows.

In other women’s singles results on Wednesday, Spain’s Paula Badosa, the 26th seed, defeated American Taylor Townsend 6-3, 7-5 to reach the third round of the US Open for the first time in her career.

And Belgium’s Elise Mertens defeated Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic 6-3, 6-2. Mertens has reached the third round or higher in 23 of her 27 major tournament appearances since the start of 2018. That is the most third-round appearances of any woman in that period.

With temperatures expected to soar into the 90s, an extreme weather policy was in effect Wednesday at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, meaning players will have a 10-minute break before the second and third sets. If both players decline the 10-minute break, play will continue uninterrupted.
