City child takes 3rd place in nationwide handwriting competition

Nehaal Hassan, an 8-year-old child from Ranchi, has secured the third position in the entire India in a writing competition organised by Writing Wizard and conducted by Extraschool.

A Class III student of St. Xavier’s School, Ranchi, Nehaal, has secured a spot at the national level by securing the first rank at the state level for the 2023-24 session. The top five students from across the country will be felicitated in Goa on September 16.

“During class preparation and in first grade, my mother would erase all my homework because of my bad handwriting and I would have to redo it over and over again. That’s how I started to make an effort to write neatly and also developed an interest in cursive writing,” the aspiring calligrapher said.

The competition was held in two stages: qualification and final, where the participants had to copy the given style and font. The participants competed against students from the same class across the country. The state-level results were announced in June 2024, with Nehaal securing the first position in Jharkhand in the category of class II students.

“I like to collect different types of pens and pencils and spend my free time learning to write in different fonts and styles. I also enjoy playing cricket, guitar and drawing. I am very fascinated by airplanes and want to become a pilot,” Hassan added.

A resident of Main Road, his parents Shadab Hassan and Neha Kaur are both professors at reputed colleges in Ranchi. He also has a younger brother Ruhaan.

“I am very happy with his performance. Nehaal is very sensitive and empathetic as a person even at a young age. Whatever comes his way, he takes it very sportingly and even takes failures or rejections in his stride,” said proud mother Neha Kaur.
