There are some interesting shows and movies coming out on Max this month, including The Penguina 2022 spin-off series The Batman film. There is also an in-depth, two-part documentary about The SopranosAnd Born Evil: The Serial Killer and the Saviora documentary series by Michael Bay about a very sinister serial killer.

The Penguin

This supervillain origin story details how Batman’s arch-nemesis The Penguin came to be. The Penguin set in the gritty Matt Reeves’ Batman universe and features Colin Farrell reprising his 1979 role. The Batman as Oswald Cobblepot, a street thug whose plan to take over Gotham’s underworld involves dressing up as a bird and, I assume, killing Batman.

Smart Guy David Chase and The Sopranos

The Sopranos forever expanded what audiences could expect from a television series when it came out in 1999, and Smart guyan HBO original docuseries, explores why this show was so much better than every other show. Filled with interviews with The Soprano’s cast, crew and especially creator David Chase, Smart guy is a must-see for fans of The Sopranos and anyone interested in the creative process behind a TV show.

Born Evil: The Serial Killer and the Savior

The first true crime documentary series from executive producer Michael Bay goes to some very dark places as it tells the story of Hadden Clark, transvestite, cannibal and serial killer. Born evil delves into Clark’s crimes and personal history, because you don’t end up this confused without coming out very confused. Fans of gruesome true crime should not miss this.

The Boy and the Heron (2023)

Animation master Hayao Miyazaki’s The boy and the heron was universally praised by critics and won an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature upon its release, so if you like quality films, you should stream it. The lush, hand-drawn art is breathtaking, and that Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli magic is in every frame of this masterpiece.

Hut in the woods

Anyone who has ever seen a horror movie knows that nothing good ever happens in a cabin in the woods, and this Max/Investigation Discovery series proves that rule applies to real life, too. The atrocities and murders that appear in every episode of this true crime series all take place in creepy, wooded cabins.

I saw the tv glow (2024)

Director Jane Schoenbrun (We’re all going to the world fair) continues her investigation into the fear and terror that hide behind the pixels in the digital world with I saw the TV glowa psychological horror film about a sinister late-night television show called The pink opaque. Produced by A24, I saw the TV glow is one of those “elevated” horror films, so if you’re a horror fan with more than two brain cells to rub together, give it a shot.

Don your robes and wizard’s hat: Max is loading his digital streams with Harry Potter this September, featuring all eight Harry Potter films, plus the “magical movie mode” version of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone with director’s commentary, deleted scenes, quiz questions and more.
